Strange encounters with West Ham players
|
I've met a few West Ham players down the years but my overall was in the early 90's (no sponsor season) I'm in Browns (the top end Club not grotty strip pub).
Having a good time on a Saturday, with a cup game vs Arsenal in the morning to look forward to.
gets to about 1am and this black guy walks in on his own and just stands at the bar. I know him from somewhere, after a couple of glances over it's only Samassi Abou.
I dance over there Imbetweener style and say hello, he dosen't speak much English but told him I was a west ham supporter and he gave a big grin. I bought him a drink (Bud Ice) and he shook my hand wandered off onto the dance floor and was having himself a very nice time.
Highbury the following afternoon I'm hungover as fuck in the clock end and he's on the pitch.

Back in 1981, I lived round the corner to Ray Stewart in Hutton, Brentwood on the Long Ridings Estate. Knocked on his door and his wife invited us in. Ray was sitting in front of the tele eating beans on toast and he kindly signed my 1980 cup final programme. How times have changed. He owned a silver Capri with Ray Stewart on the side, none of this Land Rover Vogue rubbish that you see parked in the players car park today.

Pub Bigot 4:53 Fri Sep 2 Nah! Providing I could watch and sell the film. Which brings about the well-known tale here of Pardew (then in charge at Charlton) hitting on the Mrs in Sinatra's in Puerto Banus. In reality, he's a bit of a charmer, to be fair

One night back in the 70s buying a bag of chips in the Seafarer FIsh & Chip shop in Romford, Martin Peters strolls in wearing a white suit - everyone grabbing the chip papers off the counter for an autograph. Bobby Moore in reduced circumstances circa 1988 doing a bit of work for a recruitment firm in Debenhams Romford - me and my pals were buying a vacuum cleaner as a wedding present for a mate, got Sir Bob to sign the card. Had a slash next to Stewart Robson in a bar in Brentwood just before he left Arsenal - confirmed that he was indeed signing for us before the news had broken.

When I was at uni in soton we used to see saints players out all the time on the piss. James Beattie was a pill head as well, and a right cunt to boot. remember yrs ago he broke his leg and it was reported he had "slipped" on some decking down the marina. in reality he mouthed off to the wrong people and got a kicking.

they say never meet your heroes - but in my eyes PDC more than exceeded expectations.
him shouting and swearing at pissed up wedding guests was one of the best things i've ever seen.

In the queue to get in to the Blue Orchid, Croydon some time in the 90s. Small black bloke in front of us. It's dark and we weren't sure, but my mate Ian swears he recognises him.
Manny Omoyinmi. He was not overly keen to chat as it was around the time of that incident. He just mumbled a few things as we drunkenly sang Bubbles in our Moschino shirts and Patrick Cox shoes- wankers - and tried to hug him.

I bumped in to Steve Lomas and Craig Forrest at the Sinatras bar in Puerto Banus.
Had a really good chat with both of them were a good laugh.
I then bumped into Lomas after a game at QPR at Loftus Road and he said he remembered me from Sinatras and cue loads of piss taking from my other mates.

I got married in June 1989. I took my wife on a two week holiday to Bali (back when Bali was paradise).
On the way out she made me promise not to mention West Ham, she wasn't into football and wanted a rest from me gong on about it. The day before we left John Lyall had been sacked.
We had two glorious weeks and had a flight home at 2am. We got to the airport and it was empty, we were the only flight. The tiny airport began to fill with passengers for the flight and then a car turned up outside. To my amazement Stewart Robson gets out of the car with his new wife.
I goes over and introduces myself to him as a West Ham fan, much to the bemusement of my new wife. I recall the words "no fucking escape....."being muttered.
We board our plane to Jakarta and I don't see him until we get there about 2 hours later. We are now waiting for our connecting flight to London and are in a lounge area. He comes over and we start chatting at which point it becomes obvious he has been on honeymoon for three weeks and has no idea about the sacking of John Lyall. He was shocked when I told him, as first he thought i was joking. This was pre mobile phone era and he had promised his wife no calls home.
We then gets on the plane and this is where fate showed its hand. I sat across the isle from Stewart and we chatted most of the way home.
He was a lovely bloke and it was a real shame how injury wrecked his career. He was hammer of the year in 1988 and after I met him he only played 8 more games for us before leaving on a free transfer.

Went to a party at Paul Hilton's. His wife organised party games. I was blindfolded and had to feel a row of women and work out which one was mrs oi. I picked the wrong bird.
We made excuses and left early.....

Sat on the next table to Clive Allen and his family In I think 1988 at Leytonstone's Pie N Mash shop. He was a Spurs player at the time, me and my mates were of secondary school age and West Ham, one of my mates keeps muttering out 'shit' loudly half aimed at him. Don't think he took much notice, remember he kept telling one of his kids 'Olly' to behave, now realise it was Oliver Allen who played for West Ham and Spurs youth.
Also saw Sir Trev on the central line, must have been early 90's and remembered he was on a driving ban at the time. I was completely in awe and just stared at him from between Bank to Leytonstone where I got off, must have thought I was a right wrong un lol

My brother stayed up in Bolton when we lost 1-0 in 2003 (the game that ultimately sealed our fate). For some reason which evades me now, Sam Allardyce was in the hotel bar that evening and was having a good laugh with some of the West Ham fans. He was very complimentary of our club and our fans (bearing in mind this was before his stint here), but went on to say "It's just a pity you've got a cunt for a manager". Our manager at the time being Glen Roeder.

I was down The Vic that night as well when Kitson was there.
I thanked him for his goals in 96/97 to keep us up and just said it was a massive shame that he got so many injuries as he'd have been prolific for us for years otherwise.
Mind you, Terry Brown would've tried to sell him off for the highest bidder back then knowing him.

paul kitson down the viccy tavern a couple of years ago - he had been on corporate thing i guess and had a few - he seemed genuinely amazed at the atmosphere in there
trevor brooking (again) as a six aside in cranleigh surrey had a chat with him and top bloke as expected - he did say that he had always wondered what it would have been like if he had gone to forest with bobby moore when clough wanted them both and he at the time was quite keen on it - cant blame him and very honest of him to say so
